[Saba Sports News] India is gearing up for their tour of Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in November 2024. The BGT has evolved into one of cricket’s most intense rivalries, rivaling the historic Ashes series between Australia and England.
Australian pacer Mitchell Starc highlighted the importance of the BGT, stating that it now holds a similar status to the Ashes for Australian cricketers and fans. “For Australian cricket, you’ve got the Ashes, and then you’ve got the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The rivalry has just grown from strength to strength with each series,” Starc told Wide World of Sports.
The BGT, named in honor of legends Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border, has been a fixture since 1996, becoming a marquee event for both nations. India has dominated the recent editions, winning the last four, including two historic away victories in 2018-19 and 2020-21.
Australian captain Pat Cummins echoed Starc’s sentiments, acknowledging the challenge ahead and expressing optimism about changing the outcome this time. “In the last two series here in Australia, we haven’t been successful. Hopefully, it’s time to make amends. We’ve had wins against them before, and we’ll draw confidence from that,” Cummins said.
The upcoming series carries even more weight as both teams are currently leading the World Test Championship (WTC) points table. With 60 crucial points on the line, the BGT could be decisive in shaping the final standings and determining the teams that will compete in the 2025 WTC final at Lord’s.
