[Saba Sports News] Former South African cricketer Morne Morkel has been named the new bowling coach for India’s men’s team.
His contract kicks off on September 1, a move recently confirmed by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.
Reports had suggested Morkel might join India’s coaching staff, likely on the recommendation of head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Gambhir, who has praised Morkel as one of the best bowlers he’s ever faced, shares a strong off-field rapport with him. The two have previously worked together with Lucknow Super Giants, and fans are excited to see them reunite.
After Gambhir left Lucknow to become the mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders, Morkel stayed on under new head coach Justin Langer. Gambhir’s coaching team now includes Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate as assistant coaches, along with fielding coach T. Dilip.
Interestingly, Morkel last served as the bowling coach for Pakistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup but resigned before his contract expired.
Fresh off an ODI series loss against Sri Lanka, Morkel will be eager to implement changes in Team India, who have a long break before their next match.
The Indian team will face Bangladesh in a multi-format series, including two Tests and three T20Is. This will be Morkel’s first series with India, and the former Proteas star will be aiming for a strong start.
