[Saba Sports News] Bangladesh off-spinner Nayeem Hasan expressed optimism on Friday (December 8) about their chances in the ongoing second Test against New Zealand at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. He believes that if Bangladesh can extend their lead to 200-220 runs, they have a strong chance of defending it.
By the close of Day 3, Bangladesh had advanced to 38/2 in their second innings, leading by 30 runs with eight wickets remaining. “The longer we bat, the better for us. If we can score 200 to 220 runs, we can defend the total,” Nayeem said to reporters. He observed that batting conditions improved compared to the first day and stressed the importance of maintaining momentum.
Nayeem emphasized that the team shouldn’t blame the wicket for their batting struggles in the first innings. He asserted the need to post substantial totals and bowl effectively, regardless of the pitch conditions.
Reflecting on the first innings, Nayeem acknowledged New Zealand’s comeback, led by Glenn Phillips’s 87-run knock. However, he hinted that Phillips’s aggressive approach might not be as effective in the final innings.
Meanwhile, New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips regretted not pulling away from a delivery by Shoriful Islam, which led to his dismissal at 87 runs. Phillips was distracted by movement near the sight screen but chose to play the ball, resulting in his catch behind the wicket. He shared his thoughts on the pitch, noting it behaved similarly to the first day, with spin and skid presenting a challenging batting environment.
Phillips emphasized the importance of sticking to a game plan and adapting to the pitch’s variable turn and bounce.
