[Saba Sports News] Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins, who recently led his team to victories in both the World Test Championship 2023 and the ODI World Cup, faced a personal loss months before the World Cup.
His mother, Maria, passed away after a battle with breast cancer, a loss that deeply affected Cummins during his cricketing endeavors in India. Despite this, Cummins found moments of tribute and remembrance for his mother, including a special gesture from England’s ‘Barmy Army’, who played ‘Maria’ from West Side Story on the trumpet, a clip he shared with his mother.
In an interview with ABC Sport, Cummins reflected on the significant role cricket played in his family and the respect and love shown by rivals, which he found special. He shared that he thinks of his mother daily and credited her for being a huge part of his life and successes.
“Cricket’s been a big part of our family forever, and to see the respect and love shown from our oldest rivals, it was really special. I think about her every day; she’s seen a lot of successes before this year, and she’s a huge part of who I am, and I’m sure she would have been really proud,” Cummins said.
Cummins also spoke fondly of his parents, acknowledging their efforts to keep him grounded and remind him of his fortunate circumstances in Australia, while emphasizing the importance of being aware of the larger world. This personal reflection adds a poignant backdrop to his professional achievements on the cricket field.
“Mum and dad were always trying to remind us how lucky we are to live in this country and have all the opportunities that we have, but also how we’re just one small, little part of a very big world—and make sure we open our eyes,” he added.
