[Saba Sports News] The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 season has once again found itself embroiled in controversy. In the latest peculiar turn of events, Peshawar Zalmi (PES) incurred a five-run penalty after a throw from a Multan Sultans (MUL) fielder accidentally struck wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan’s gloves, which were left on the ground. This unusual incident occurred during a match on Thursday.
During a delivery from spinner Khushdil Shah, Zalmi’s batsman Tom Kohler-Cadmore played a shot towards the fine leg region. As Rizwan chased after the ball, he left his gloves on the ground.
Before he could retrieve the ball, another fielder intercepted and threw it, hitting Rizwan’s gloves.
Babar Azam, the non-striker, noticed where the throw had landed and brought it to the attention of umpire Aleem Dar. After investigating the matter, Dar penalized the Sultans with five additional runs for what he deemed ‘illegal fielding.’
According to the rules of cricket outlined by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), fielding the ball illegally includes willfully discarding clothing, equipment, or any other object that subsequently makes contact with the ball while it is in play. “A fielder will be deemed to have fielded the ball illegally if, while the ball is in play he/she willfully discards a piece of clothing, equipment or any other object which subsequently makes contact with the ball.”
