[Saba Sports News] Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Wankhede Stadium was at the center of festivities organized by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) during the Ranji Trophy 2024 final between Mumbai and Vidarbha. In a grand gesture, the MCA honored Mumbai’s Ajinkya Rahane, Vidarbha’s Akshay Wadkar, match officials, and players from Mumbai’s inaugural match at the venue with special mementos.
This ceremony, highlighted in the opening remarks by commentator Vijay Dahiya, was part of the stadium’s golden jubilee celebrations, reflecting on its storied past since the first Test in 1975.
The stadium, known for its intense cricketing battles and vibrant atmosphere, has evolved significantly since its inception, particularly after a major renovation before the 2011 ODI World Cup, enhancing spectator experience. On the field, the final saw a spirited start by Mumbai, despite an initial challenge from Vidarbha’s bowlers. Mumbai’s resilience was showcased by Shardul Thakur’s swift half-century, boosting the team after a shaky start.
His performance, especially after a standout century in the semifinals, kept Mumbai’s hopes alive as they ended their first innings with a competitive score, setting the stage for an engaging contest against Vidarbha.
