[Saba Sports News] Twenty years ago, Afghanistan played their first official game in an Asian Cricket Council tournament. Despite having potential, they struggled to professionalize their cricket. The globalization of the sport, especially through franchise cricket, helped them realize their potential and compete against top-ranked nations.
In two decades, Afghanistan has achieved what many countries can only dream of. They have caused upsets in world cricket, earned Test status, and now qualified for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024. Finishing second behind India in the Super Eights, they will face South Africa at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad, aiming for their first final in an ICC tournament. Skipper Rashid Khan has called for more support as they stand on the brink of history, acknowledging the crucial role of their supporters in their growth and promising to play memorable cricket. “We have come a long way and faced many challenges. But your support has always been our strength. Now, as we stand on the brink of history, we need your voices louder than ever. Let’s make this moment unforgettable,” Rashid shared.
Afghanistan needed a win in their final Super Eights game to make it to the semis. In a close match against Bangladesh, they secured an eight-run victory. Following the win, some Afghanistan players were seen in tears, and fans celebrated in the streets back home. The Afghanistan Cricket Board shared viral images of the celebration.
