[Saba Sports News] In recent years, a peculiar trend has emerged among
Malaysian badminton fans. They have developed a strong inclination towards
positive reinforcement for players and express disapproval towards criticism or
negative comments. However, Malaysian national badminton team coaching
director, Rexy Mainaky, holds a different perspective, suggesting that this
approach may have adverse effects on players’ future development. He cited an
example from the 2023 BWF World Tour Finals, highlighted a moment when the duo
of Aaron Chia Teng Fong and SOH Wooi Yik held a 12-7 lead against the pair of
Liu Yuchen and Ou Xuanyi. However, the latter then managed to score seven
consecutive points, taking the lead 14-12. Rexy observed that the pair seemed
mentally unprepared for the turn of events. According to Mainaky, if players
only receive praise and positive feedback, they may struggle to cope with
adversity and become flustered when facing setbacks or being overtaken by
opponents. As a coach, it is crucial to provide constructive criticism and be
strict with players at times, as these challenges can help strengthen their
determination. In contrast, excessive fan praise does not contribute
significantly to a player’s growth.
