[Saba Sports News] The Nepali women’s cricket scene has seen remarkable growth, with numerous female players gaining exposure through franchise cricket. This opportunity has significantly enhanced their skills, leading to impressive performances on the international stage. At the forefront of these achievements is the ACC Women’s T20 Premier Cup 2024, where Nepal demonstrated its cricketing strength by defeating Maldives by a whopping 215 runs. Rubina Chhetry, in particular, stole the spotlight with a historic performance, propelling her team into the quarterfinals.
In a match played at the UKM Cricket Oval in Bangi on February 13, Nepal capitalized on winning the toss and choosing to bat, despite initial setbacks. With the team at 48/3, Chhetry’s entry was a game-changer. She scored an unbeaten 118 off 59 balls, setting a new record for Nepal’s highest individual score and becoming the first Nepali woman to hit a century in international cricket. Her innings, along with Puja Mahato’s half-century, led Nepal to tie their highest total of 228 runs.
The Maldives’ response was underwhelming, as they were bowled out for just 13 runs, marking Nepal’s largest victory margin. Chhetry also shined with the ball, taking three wickets. Her remarkable achievement included becoming the highest scorer from the number 4 position or lower in women’s T20Is, surpassing notable international players.
Maldives struggled significantly, with six players out for a duck, underscoring Nepal’s bowling dominance. This victory secured Nepal’s top position in their group and advancement to the knockout stages, with a chance to qualify for the Women’s Asia Cup and the ACC Women’s Emerging Asia Cup.
