[Saba Sports News] When Joel Wilson signaled Kuldeep Yadav’s dismissal, R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo erupted with joy. Sri Lanka had won by 110 runs, sealing the series 2-0 against India, their first series win over them in 27 years. Interim head coach Sanath Jayasuriya couldn’t stop smiling during his post-match interview.
Despite losing the T20I series 3-0 and dealing with injuries, Sri Lanka, the underdogs, fought back in Colombo. Jayasuriya praised his young team for their resilience.
“I remember the last series we won against India in 1997. After 27 years, I’m thrilled to be part of this team. These boys are talented, and the whole country saw what we can do.”
Sri Lanka showed grit, with Dunith Wellalage scoring 108 runs and taking 7 wickets. Jayasuriya credited a seven-day coaching program with Zubin Bharucha for the improvement.
“Zubin helped the players learn to play long innings, which built their confidence. Beating the Number 1 team in the world is incredible.”
Jayasuriya is set to return to his role as high performance manager post the England tour, as Sri Lanka searches for a permanent head coach. Despite the serious decisions, the team’s mood was celebratory.
“They all want to go back to the hotel for a victory dance,” Jayasuriya revealed.
