[Saba Sports News] Things are taking a grim turn for former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan, as he faces accusations in the murder case of Rubel, who was killed on August 7 during protests in Bangladesh. The protests, sparked by student outrage over unfair job allotments, led to nationwide unrest and resulted in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fleeing the country. Rubel was reportedly involved in the anti-government rallies when the tragedy occurred.
In addition to Shakib, former PM Hasina is also among the accused. Notably, Shakib was a member of Hasina’s Awami League political party and served as an MP in her government. According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, Rafiqul Islam, Rubel’s father, has filed a case accusing around 400-500 people.
The incident has also drawn attention to Bangladesh’s entertainment industry, with actor and politician Ferdous Ahmed named as the 55th accused.
Ferdous, like Shakib, was also an MP in the Awami League. Over 450 people reportedly lost their lives during the riots against Hasina’s government before she fled the country on August 5.
In the wake of these events, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan, a close ally of Hasina, stepped down from his position.
Former Bangladesh captain Faruque Ahmed has taken over as the new BCB President. Nazmul’s long-standing political ties with Hasina, having served as Sports Minister under her for over 15 years, may soon come under scrutiny.
