[Saba Sports News] The Mumbai Indians clinched their inaugural win of the IPL 2024 season against the Delhi Capitals at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, marking the tournament’s 20th match on April 7. In a powerful batting display, it was Romario Shepherd’s performance that notably shone for the quintuple champions. Batting in the middle order, Shepherd unleashed a rapid 39* off just 10 balls, including hammering Anrich Nortje for 32 runs in the innings’ closing over. This explosive innings propelled MI to a formidable total of 234 for 5, their third highest in IPL history, setting the stage for a 29-run triumph.
Shamar Joseph, Shepherd’s fellow West Indian and Lucknow Super Giants player, lavished praise on Shepherd for his game-changing inning. In a video published by the IPL on ‘X’, Joseph lauded Shepherd’s remarkable ability to hit long balls and acknowledged his positive influence both on and off the field.
“We come from one area coming into cricket, getting to know him and being around him, he’s such a good fellow. Always gives you advice on how to go about your games and, keep training hard and always just continue doing what you do best,” said Joseph.
Joseph’s commendations extended beyond Shepherd’s batting prowess, highlighting his good nature and readiness to offer advice and encouragement to his teammates.
“Congratulations. He’s an exceptional player and can hit the ball a long way. So let’s continue good work and enjoy every moment,” he added.
Shepherd’s contributions were pivotal in securing Mumbai Indians’ first victory of the season, following three consecutive losses. Awarded Player of the Match for his all-around performance, which included a 1/54 bowling spell, Shepherd has proven to be a key asset for MI, especially under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy. His dual-threat capability with bat and ball is essential as MI aims to overturn their season’s slow start.
