[Saba Sports News] New Zealand player Tim Southee received an official reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Group C match against the West Indies at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad.
Southee breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which concerns “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.” Additionally, one demerit point was added to his disciplinary record, marking his first offense in a 24-month period. The incident occurred in the 18th over of New Zealand’s innings when Southee smashed a hand sanitizer dispenser after his dismissal.
Southee admitted the offense and accepted the sanction proposed by David Boon of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, eliminating the need for a formal hearing. The charge was leveled by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Alex Wharf, third umpire Richard Illingworth, and fourth umpire Michael Gough. Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
BlackCaps Out of the T20 World Cup 2024
The loss to the West Indies eliminated Kane Williamson-led New Zealand from the group stage, preventing them from advancing to the Super 8. Their upcoming games against Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Uganda will be dead rubbers. Earlier, they lost their first game to Afghanistan by 84 runs, with Fazalhaq Farooqi and Rashid Khan delivering exceptional spells to bundle New Zealand out for 75. Farooqi, leading the highest wicket-takers chart in the T20 World Cup, was named Player of the Match against New Zealand.
