[Saba Sports News] The name Viktor Axelsen may
not carry much recognition in China, but his Chinese name holds significance
among badminton fans in the country. As the reigning Tokyo Olympic men’s
singles champion and a prominent Danish player, Axelsen has garnered attention.
Recently, during an interview coinciding with the Chinese Lunar New Year,
Axelsen shared the story behind his Chinese name. He explained that
“An” represents his surname Axelsen, “Sai” signifies his
passion for playing games, and “dragon” symbolizes the Chinese
nation. Interestingly, Axelsen began learning Chinese at the age of 19 and has
since become proficient in the language. He possesses a deep understanding of
Chinese cultural elements such as the symbolism of dragons and traditional
celebrations like the Spring Festival. Axelsen recognizes the Chinese people’s
association with dragons, evident in names like former badminton world champion
Chen Long. Looking ahead to 2024, Axelsen aspires to deliver his best
performance and secure his second Olympic championship.
