[Saba Sports News] Mirko Vucinic, a Montenegro
forward, has reportedly received a two-year prison sentence in Italy for tax
evasion. The 40-year-old player has had a notable career in Serie A, having
played for teams such as Lecce, Roma, and Juventus. In 2014, Vucinic left
Juventus to join the Abu Dhabi Peninsula Club in the United Arab Emirates,
where he earned an income of approximately 6 million euros. However, the
Italian tax authorities claimed that Vucinic should have paid taxes in Italy
since they believed he still primarily resided in the country during that
period. Allegedly, Vucinic failed to fulfil his tax obligations. Consequently,
the Italian tax authorities pursued legal action against him for tax evasion.
Recently, the Lecce court in Italy delivered a first-instance verdict, finding
Vucinic guilty of the offense and sentencing him to two years in prison. As a
result, his properties, assets, and accounts in Italy have been seized, and he
will be required to repay the owed taxes to the tax department.
