[Saba Sports News] Lucknow Super Giants have approached former cricketer VVS Laxman to join their coaching staff for IPL 2025. Currently the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Laxman is unlikely to renew his contract ending in September 2024.
BCCI officials had previously discussed the India head coach role with Laxman after Rahul Dravid’s tenure ended. However, Laxman declined, citing reluctance to travel extensively with the national team. Having worked with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Laxman prefers coaching IPL teams, which demands a shorter commitment. LSG, who appointed Justin Langer as head coach in 2023, are unlikely to replace him, so Laxman might join as a batting coach, mentor, or Director of Cricket.
Other franchises may also be interested in Laxman. Kolkata Knight Riders recently saw mentor Gautam Gambhir leave to join the national team, and batting coach Abhishek Nayar might follow. Delhi Capitals, having parted ways with head coach Ricky Ponting, could also consider Laxman, though no talks have been confirmed.
Vikram Rathour is expected to replace Laxman as head of the NCA. Laxman recently coached India’s senior men’s team in a series against Zimbabwe, leading them to a 4-1 victory. This was likely Laxman’s last assignment with the national team, as Gautam Gambhir is set to take over for the Sri Lanka series.
