For the 2024 season, Nottinghamshire has inked a
multi-format contract with New Zealand batsman Will Young.
Young, who has made 56 appearances for the Black Caps,
will be available for seven County Championship games and the whole Vitality
Blast season for Notts Outlaws.
The county is thrilled about his purchase, in part
because of his impressive performance from the previous summer. He scored 299
runs at an average of 59.80 in his brief three-game red-ball stay, including
145 in his debut at the Kia Oval against Surrey and 87 off 79 deliveries in a
win over Kent. Now that he is a fixture in all three formats, Ben Duckett will
probably miss a significant portion of the upcoming season due to injury,
therefore Young will help Notts make up for his absence.
Young, a top-order batsman with 13 Test matches who
averages 26.45, scored his third century in an ODI on Sunday as New Zealand
defeated Bangladesh in the opening game of a three-match series. In the just
concluded 50-over World Cup, he also made six appearances. New Zealand advanced
to the semi-finals before succumbing to the hosts, India.
“Will adds valuable experience to our batting
group, especially with the potential loss of Ben Duckett to England for large
portions of the season,” Peter Moores, Nottinghamshire head coach, said.
“He showed his quality as a player last season,
not only with the runs he scored but also in the manner he scored them. His
calm approach will add stability to our Championship team as well as being a
good tactical support for Haseeb [Hameed], our captain.
“Will’s availability for the majority of the
first half of the season across formats is also significant. He fitted
brilliantly into the squad last season and will give us continuity as we
navigate our way through the business part of our season.
“Personally, I’m excited as in his brief spell
with us last season, I really enjoyed working with him as a coach.”
