[Saba Sports News] The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will be relocated from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates.
Originally scheduled for October 3 to 20 in Bangladesh, the event will now be held in Dubai and Sharjah.
This change was prompted by the ongoing political instability in Bangladesh, where an interim government has taken over after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled. Given the escalating civil unrest and fatalities, the decision to move the tournament was unavoidable.
While Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka were considered as alternative hosts, the UAE was ultimately chosen due to its favorable weather conditions.
“It’s unfortunate that the Women’s T20 World Cup won’t be hosted in Bangladesh, as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have delivered a memorable event,” said ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice. “I want to thank the BCB for their efforts to make it possible, but travel advisories from the governments of several participating teams made it unfeasible.
However, Bangladesh will retain the hosting rights, and we look forward to bringing an ICC event there soon. I’d also like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in to host on behalf of the BCB and to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their generous offers of support. We look forward to seeing ICC events in those countries in 2026.”
Additionally, ICC Chair Greg Barclay has confirmed he will not seek a third term and will step down when his current term ends in November. Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020 and re-elected in 2022. Current directors must submit nominations for the next Chair by August 27, and if more than one candidate is nominated, an election will be held, with the new Chair’s term starting on December 1.
