[Saba Sports News] The Women’s Premier League (WPL) provided a platform for emerging talents to shine on a bigger stage, and Asha Shobana and Sajana Sajeevan seized the opportunity.
Their impressive performances earned them spots on the Indian Women’s team, and they are set to represent India in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, starting on October 3. This marks the first time two players from Kerala will represent India at an ICC event since S Sreesanth in the 2011 World Cup and Sanju Samson in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Asha, a 33-year-old leg-spinner, has played three T20Is and two ODIs for India, taking four wickets in each format.
Reflecting on the WPL, she said, “The WPL experience will be invaluable in a tournament as big as the World Cup. I’ve bowled to most of the top batters in WPL and know where to target them. I’m working on some new variations and hope to surprise our rivals in the World Cup.”
Sajana, known for her last-ball six that secured a win for Mumbai Indians against Delhi Capitals, has featured in nine T20Is, scoring 30 runs across four innings. Despite not yet playing in ODIs, her journey to the national team has been marked by over a decade of hard work in domestic cricket.
“I wouldn’t be here without the WPL,” Sajana said. “Playing for India is a great responsibility, and I’ve felt the pressure while batting. I’m working on improving and hope to make the most of the opportunities I get.”
