[Saba Sports News] India’s star leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has signed with Northamptonshire for the rest of the 2024 season.
The 34-year-old will feature in the team’s final One Day Cup match against Kent and their remaining five County Championship games. Joining him at Northamptonshire is young Indian opener Prithvi Shaw, who has been in good form with three half-centuries in his last five games.
Chahal, who has long expressed a desire to play Test cricket for India, has never been given the opportunity. With 35 first-class games under his belt and 96 wickets at an average of 34.51, Chahal is not currently in India’s red-ball plans.
Missing out on the Duleep Trophy, he chose to play County cricket instead. Northamptonshire head coach John Sadler welcomed Chahal, noting that his experience and skills would add depth and variety to the bowling attack.
Currently, Northamptonshire is eighth on the One Day Cup points table. Despite a strong start against Kent, their standing won’t change. For Chahal, it’s a valuable practice match as he aims to stay in contention for the upcoming Champions Trophy.
In the County Championship, Northamptonshire sits seventh in an eight-team group. These five matches offer Chahal a chance to prove his red-ball credentials in foreign conditions and push for a spot in India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
